The Importance of Spin in Modern Bowling

In modern bowling, a certain amount of spin is essential, whether you are a PBA player or a Japanese professional bowler. While the specific number of revolutions matters, a minimum amount of spin is necessary. It is important to practice curving the ball while mastering the basics such as walking, timing, hand release, and swing technique.

Release Practice Methods

Do Not Walk on the Approach

Before starting practice, it is emphasized to practice the release without walking on the approach. Through many lessons, I have found that practicing the release while walking is very difficult. Therefore, the rule for practicing only the release is not to walk on the approach.

Standing Position and Posture

The standing position is important during release practice. Adjust the distance to avoid crossing the foul line. As a guideline for standing, refer to the dots at the bowling alley. Stand with your feet slightly apart, about shoulder-width, with your feet pointing towards the pins without opening your hips. Place your right foot behind the pivot foot to avoid interfering with the swing.

By leaning forward, you can bring the lowest point under your shoulder. Use your left hand to maintain balance while keeping this posture. To perform a strong release, it is important to create a wall by bringing the left shoulder forward to transfer power to the right arm.

Bending and Straightening the Elbow

Next, I will explain the movement of bending and straightening the elbow. Keep your elbow straight until the swing top, then bend it. This transmits the rebound to the wrist, changing it from a cup to a broke position. The action of straightening and then bending the elbow is important. While being aware of the elbow’s movement, do not bend the elbow at the swing top, but bend it when lowering from the top. Shifting your focus from the shoulder to the elbow allows you to bend the elbow without using force. Keep the elbow bent until just before the foul line, then strongly straighten it. Transmit the rebound by straightening the elbow without exerting force on the wrist. Quickly and strongly straightening the elbow moves the wrist and adds spin to the ball.

Wrist Movement and Release Points

Wrist movement should be natural, and you should be conscious of keeping your hand open rather than hooking it. The key point to adding spin to the ball is the movement of the wrist releasing from the cup to the broke position. Strong and quick release generates spin. It is recommended to start with a light ball. It is important to learn the movement of bending and straightening the elbow through repeated practice. Additionally, it is recommended to practice while checking your own swing with a video.

Summary and Advice on Practice

Release practice is one of the basics. Practice the release along with approach practice and swing practice to acquire the technique of spinning the ball. Spin is essential to succeed globally. Please use this video as a reference for your practice.
